QR Codes 101: Best Practices, Use Cases & Tips
Everything you need to create scannable, reliable QR codes for print and digital campaigns.
What is a QR code?
QR (Quick Response) codes are 2-D barcodes that store data such as URLs, text, or Wi-Fi credentials. Your phone’s camera reads the black and white modules to reconstruct the data. Our generator creates static QR codes that work offline and never “expire.”
For most marketing and print uses, a static code is perfect. If you need to change the destination later, use a short link or redirect on your own domain so you can update the target without reprinting.
Sizing for print (the “10:1” rule)
As a rule of thumb, the scan distance should be at most 10× the QR code’s width. If someone will scan from 1 meter away, print the code at least 10 cm wide. Increase the size for low light, glossy materials, or when the code competes with busy backgrounds.
- Business cards: 20–25 mm
- Flyers/posters: 30–50 mm
- Billboards: 150 mm+
Always test on the final material. Matte finishes and high contrast scan best.
Design, colors & contrast
- Contrast: Dark foreground on a light background works best. Avoid low contrast combos (e.g., pale blue on white).
- Quiet zone: Leave a blank margin (quiet zone) around the code — our tool builds the QR quiet zone and lets you add extra pixel margin for print layouts.
- Brand colors: You can recolor the modules — just keep contrast high. Inverse (light modules on dark) can reduce reliability.
- Logos: If you overlay a logo, choose a higher error correction level (Q or H) and keep the logo within the finder patterns.
- Transparency: Transparent backgrounds look great on colored paper. Ensure the underlying surface is light enough to keep contrast.
Tracking scans with short links
Static QR codes don’t have analytics built in. To track performance without “dynamic” subscriptions, point your QR code to a short URL you control (or a route on your site) and add UTM parameters. Your analytics platform will capture the visits.

QR Code FAQ
Are QR codes free to generate?
Yes. This tool generates static QR codes at no cost. You can download and use them commercially.
Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes do not expire. As long as the printed code is legible and the link is live, it will keep working.
Can I change the destination later?
Not directly for static codes. Use a short link or a redirect on your domain so you can update the final destination without reprinting.
What size should I print?
Follow the 10:1 rule. If people scan from ~50 cm away, print at least 5 cm wide. Increase size for glossy or textured surfaces.
Can I use colors or transparency?
Yes. Keep high contrast (dark modules on a light background). Transparency is supported — ensure the surface behind is light.
